The jab is the description for the leading hand to snap out in a punch. This is used a lot in martial arts free sparring, or in street fighting, but you will notice it is not used a lot in this training, as putting your guards up and jabbing will give away surprise that you can defend yourself. Most martial artists will remain relaxed with guards down until the opponent gets close enough to use the softer control techniques rather than punching.
The jab is an important step of a lot of power techniques, but it is not a power technique in its own right as it is the closest hand to the opponent so cannot get a lot of momentum behind the strike. But while it is not the strongest strike, it plays three very important functions:
