In martial arts, black and white are at the opposite ends of the belt colours – white standing for innocence and the lack of knowledge in the Art, and black for proficiency and understanding. There is an 'eye' of the opposite color within the symbol, which means there is not just one point of view. We are better when we listen to each other, the young can help teach the old, the new can complement the wise.
This concept means there is no single right answer, it helps prevent us from looking only from one direction and keeps our mind open to something that can make the existing even better. Too many instructors will demand that their way is the only right way, and that view only encourages mediocrity.
