Strikes to the abdomen are effective for two reasons: 1. Causing difficulty to breathing will tire the opponent quickly and 2. Since the abdomen is where twisting occurs, injury to muscles and organs will reduce the force with which the opponent can deliver punches and kicks.
The sternum is located between the solar plexus and the throat in the centre of the chest. A strike to this target area affects the breathing system. Impact here can have two effects: 1. Putting pressure on the lungs which will affect breathing and 2. Separation of the rib bone and cartilage will cause great pain and difficulty breathing in. Strikes effective here are hard strikes – fist, palm heel, elbow, knee and kicks.
