The feet are effective weapons, as not only can they transfer all the power from the leg, but they can reach further than the arms. Some defense styles use a lot of legs and feet as it makes it difficult for the opponent to get close enough to use their hands. Assaults normally start from close, however, so you must learn hand and knee defenses.
1. Instep – top of foot
The instep is used for power kicks, but care must be taken not to transfer too much force through the ankle joint. Kicks should be delivered with the main bones in the top of the foot, not transferred from the top of the toes. Common targets are the knee joint and the mid section. Experienced and flexible people can kick to the head.
